Welcome To Osher Lifelong Learning Institute At Temple University!

Where People, 50 Years and Older, Discover the Joy of Learning

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Temple University strives to be an outstanding educational program for people 50 years of age and older in the Delaware Valley. Participants will enjoy a diverse community, where courses are in-person and online, where they help shape their own learning and opportunities for socialization, and where they are encouraged to engage in OLLI, the university and their communities.

Dear Current and Prospective OLLI Members,

We have completed the first phase of membership enrollment and course registration for our fall semester and sent the lottery results to everyone.

In this second phase of enrollment/registration, which began Thursday, August 31 and will continue through Friday, Sept 22, you can still sign up for OLLI and register for courses.

In fact, we have 53 courses that still have openings, at the time of this update. Check them out on our Course Registration tab, on the left.

You can either enroll/register through our online system, or if you need help, call us at (215) 204-1505.

Thank you.

If you are not on our mailing list and would like to start receiving our emails, you can add yourself to our mailing list here.

OLLI's Mission

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Temple University is a university led and member supported organization that provides a wide array of educational and experiential opportunities to a diverse group of people, 50 years of age and older, who learn, teach and discover together.

OLLI'S RELATIONSHIP TO TEMPLE UNIVERSITY

Although OLLI is co-driven by volunteers, it is a program of Temple University. Throughout the years, it has received substantial financial and in-kind support from Temple University. This includes support from Temple's Computer Services, Security, Facilities, Human Resources, and Accounts Payable departments, to name a few.

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Temple University organized in 1975 and was known initially as Association of Retired Professionals (ARP). There were 85 members and 34 courses in the fall of 1976. At that time, only two similar programs existed in the United States. In 1998, the name changed to Temple Association for Retired Professionals (TARP), and later to Temple Association for Retired Persons.

In 2007, TARP received a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation, and changed its name to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Temple University. We are one in a network of 120 OLLI programs in the nation. As more adult programs become available in coming years, we hope to be at the leading edge.

Become an OLLI Member

We recommend you enroll online (either by yourself, or with our staff's assistance) and pay by credit card - that way, your membership will be active immediately. If you prefer to pay by check, please complete the OLLI New Member Application and it will take a few weeks to process your membership. If you have any questions or would like our assistance, please email olli@temple.edu and we would be happy to help.

You must first enroll in an OLLI Membership before you can register for courses.
If you have not yet enrolled in an OLLI membership, please click here to go to the Become an OLLI Member page.

Registration for courses will be become available 4 or 5 weeks prior to the start of the semester (we will announce the exact registration dates on our homepage and send an email announcement to all OLLI members) and will remain open during the entire two-week registration period.

In order to accommodate our members who are not tech savvy, we created a registration system we call The Lottery in which there is no advantage to registering early and no disadvantage to registering later.

During this period, when you register, you will join the wait list for the course. Don't be alarmed. After the two-week registration period is over, we take down all courses, to process registrations.

If a course is undersubscribed, everyone who is on the wait list will be registered. If a course is oversubscribed, we run the lottery which randomly determines who will be registered. You can be fairly certain that you will be admitted to most courses that accept 200 or more students. See the course description to view the Maximum Class Size.

At the end of the week, emails will be sent to all OLLI members announcing the courses they are now registered in. You can also log in to your DestinyOne account to view this information. Please look in the section above to find instructions on How To Look Up What OLLI Courses You Are Registered In.

If there are courses that still have space remaining, they will be made available for registration on our course registration page, on a first-come, first-served basis. At this point, if you are interested in a course that does not appear there, you may email olli@temple.edu on the off-chance that a member has recently dropped the course and one space has become available. Please look in the section above to find instructions on How To Register for Courses.

If you have any questions or would like our assistance, please email olli@temple.edu and we would be happy to help.

OLLI offers partial scholarships for those who cannot afford to pay the full cost. This year, are offering two types of scholarships: either a 25% or 50% scholarship. If you wish to apply for a semester or full year scholarship, click here to access the form. Deadline to submit is August 16, 2022 or until all scholarship funds have been exhausted. Once your scholarship request is approved, OLLI staff will contact you to assist you with enrollment.

The deadline to request a refund is the Friday before the start of the semester in which you joined. If you enroll in an OLLI membership and change your mind, please email OLLI at olli@temple.edu as soon as possible.

The cancellation fee is $15.

OLLI at Temple offers many volunteer opportunities for its members! If you're interested in volunteering in any of the areas below , please click here to go to the OLLI Volunteer Interest Form to let us know.

Volunteer Instructors

A key feature that distinguishes OLLI at Temple from most educational institutions is that our instructors are volunteers. We offer instructors a free membership during the semester they teach and a 15% discount towards a membership during the remaining semesters that year. If an instructor teaches 2 courses in a year, they are awarded a free full-year membership.

Volunteer Leaders

OLLI at Temple has an elected Council comprised of a President, two Vice Presidents, Treasurer, Secretary, and seven Councilors. The President, two Vice Presidents, Treasurer, and Secretary comprise the Executive Committee. OLLI’s Council meets ten times a year and OLLI members are welcome to attend these meetings.

Volunteer Committees

The description of each Committee listed below can be found in the OLLI Member Handbook

  • Curriculum Committee
  • Library Committee
  • Special Events Committee
  • Friday Forum / Summer Cafe Committee
  • Membership Committee
