Course Description

To familiarize real estate professionals with Philadelphia’s progress toward economic recovery from the pandemic, from stay-at-home directives, labor shortages and the reluctance of many professionals to give up the flexibility of work-from-home. The diversification of Center City’s economy and land-use since 1990 and the dynamic growth of life sciences in University City in the last several years helped buffer large portions of the workforce from many of the negative impacts of the pandemic. But many lower-skilled service jobs that depend on face-to-face interaction have severely contracted due to the absence of professional workers and of tourism, conventions and trade shows. Lost jobs includes restaurant, retail and hotel employment, as well as building service positions like janitors, security and building and mechanical engineers. What does this mean in the coming year for real estate development and housing demand and for local income disparities? How can local public policy foster or hinder an inclusive economic recovery.
