Identifying Medical Needs - Protective Services Enrichment Training
Instructors: Connie Twyman and Lori Knockstead
Protective services caseworkers must be able to identify medical concerns quickly. This training will examine common medical values, terms, diagnoses, and conditions so caseworkers can develop investigative plans and coordinate prompt interventions when medical issues are identified. The training will also help caseworkers communicate effectively with physicians, agency nurses, or other medical professionals.
- Individual registration is required.
- Enrollment is only available to adult protective services (APS) and older adults protective services (OAPS) staff and is not available to the public.
To receive PDA Protective Services credit hours, participants are required to:
- Participate in the live training (via Zoom)
- Video and audio are required to be on for the duration, with the camera positioned with their full face on the screen.
- Certificates will be issued upon successful completion.
- Partial certificates for missing any portion are not available.
Learner Outcomes
Upon completion of this training, participants will have the ability to:
- Recognize when an individual's heart rate/pulse, blood pressure, oxygen levels, weight loss, diabetes, pressure wounds, and other medical needs or concerns require medical evaluation.
- Develop investigative plans for reported medical concerns and coordinate prompt interventions when medical issues are identified.
Notes
(Fall 2022) Training Details:
- This training will be instructed live via Zoom and is combined with reading materials
- The link to the Zoom meeting will be sent one week prior to the training
- All participants will be required to have the following technology to join:
- Zoom Meeting access (meeting link will be sent to registered participants one week prior)
- a web camera turned on for the entire training and positioned so the trainer can see your full face on the screen
- a computer microphone and speakers turned on for the entire training (muted unless sharing with the group)
- Participants are requested to not be in transit for the duration of the training
- Attendees must be on time, participate, and attend the entire training for credit
- Zoom Room Opens at 8:30 AM (participants will enter the waiting room for attendance)
- Training Start 9:00 am
- Lunch 11:45 am - 12:45 pm
- Training End 4:00 pm
- Certificate issued for Protective Services credit hours upon completion of the live training

Social Work Continuing Education:
This training is approved for 5.5 continuing education hours by Temple University Harrisburg. Temple University Harrisburg is a pre-approved provider of continuing education by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors. These credit hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal.
