Course Description

Social workers are experts at navigating complex systems. However, navigating health insurance can be difficult and daunting without foundational knowledge of the various types of coverage and benefits. Social workers in the medical field are often responsible for obtaining insurance authorizations and assisting patients and their families with insurance-related issues. This course will provide participants with basic knowledge of the most common types of health insurance and the steps taken to obtain insurance authorizations for healthcare needs.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify appropriate steps for obtaining insurance authorizations; and 
  • Differentiate between Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance. 

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:  

  • Provide support and education to patients navigating their healthcare benefits; and 
  • Navigate local uninsured and other supportive resources for healthcare needs.
