Course Description

Social workers have an important role in medication management. As non-prescribers, social workers are a critical and valuable part of the medical treatment team. When social workers understand medication, psychopharmacology, and ethics, patients remain safe and effectiveness of overall treatment increases.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:  

  • Clarify their role as part of the medical treatment team;  
  • Confidently assess the needs of patients to support the next steps of medical care; and 
  • Demonstrate foundational knowledge of the uses of psychiatric medications. 

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:  

  • Effectively communicate with prescribers and the medical treatment team ;  
  • Support clients in advocating for their needs; and 
  • Communicate the effects of psychiatric medications to individuals and families.
