Course Description

Ever wonder why so many of us make choices that we know have adverse consequences for our health? This course will help us answer this question as we dive into the science of the field of Health Psychology and identify and discuss the interaction of psychological, biological, behavioral, and social factors in the study of health issues. Course content will review mechanisms and pathways within several health topics, including smoking, alcohol/drug use, and pain management, and help us in identifying approaches to increase the health and well-being of those we work with.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify psychological and social factors that contribute to wellness;  
  • Identify effective strategies for health promotion, illness prevention and treatment, and coping with chronic health conditions; and 
  • Identify behaviors that may be impacting overall wellness. 

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:  

  • Apply behaviors that enhance overall wellness; 
  • Collaboratively develop goal plans to address health compromising behaviors; and 
  • Identify the stress-illness link and differentiate between harmful stress and positive stress.
