Course Description

This beginner course is an introduction to substance use disorder and how it is addressed in a healthcare setting. Substance use disorder and the opioid epidemic have severely impacted Philadelphia in recent years. Social workers play a crucial role in the assessment, treatment, and placement of patients experiencing substance use, as well as in promoting positive culture change in healthcare. This course will focus on the relationship between substance use disorder and chronic illness, as well as treatment options.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify common substances seen in healthcare and the appropriate language to use; and 
  • Recognize the relationship between substance use and chronic illness. 

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:  

  • Identify treatment options and levels of care for patients with SUD; and 
  • Promote positive culture change around substance use and harm reduction.
