Building Philadelphia - Six Buildings and Their Impact on Our City
In this lecture Warren examine six buildings or building complexes from the middle of the 18th century to the end of the 20th century - how they came about and how they have impacted the Philadelphia of today. Elfreth’s alley, Pennsylvania Hospital, Old St. Joseph’s Church, Eastern State Penitentiary, Wanamakers and the President’s House Project. He will place each building in context and explore both how they got built and what they can tell us about larger societal issues.
Instructor bio: Warren Williams, AIA, is a retired architect with over 30 years of experience, much of it at the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. Previously, he worked as a planner in California. Growing up in Bucks County, he has had a lifelong interest in history. Mr. Williams has led walking tours exploring Philadelphia’s historic architecture and city planning for over 25 years, and he occasionally lectures on Philadelphia’s historical development. In his free time, he is an avid photographer of historic buildings and urban streetscapes.
Class capacity: 500 (this class will most likely be a webinar on zoom which means you will only see the speaker and the class tech. There will be opportunity to ask questions in the Q and A.
