A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama’s Mother

Speaker - Janny Scott

Friday March 19

10:00AM - 11:00AM

(Registration closes March 18 at NOON)

Janny Scott, a former reporter for The New York Times and the author of the best-selling 2011 biography of Stanley Ann Dunham, will discuss the astonishing life and lasting impact of the once little-known anthropologist and microfinance pioneer whose son, a product of his mother's values and unconventional parenting, would go on to become the forty-fourth president of the United States. Dunham, who lived more than half her adult life in Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, and raised two biracial children largely as a single mother, reared her eldest to be, as he has put it jokingly, a combination of Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, and Harry Belafonte. Then she died, at fifty-two, as he was running for public office for the first time. She was never to know who or what he would become.
