Course Description

Course Description: This course focuses on identifying systems’ issues and changes that social workers can advocate for and participate in to reduce the incidence and effects of trauma. We will focus on recognizing the disparities among communities and analyze ethical issues presenting barriers to trauma-informed policies. Additionally, this course assesses strategic approaches to identifying, naming, and addressing traumatic practices and policies. Finally, this course will cover aspects of critical self-awareness, which is essential for trauma-informed advocacy. This course is part of the trauma-informed practice certificate, and is open to all participants, including those seeking to complete the certificate and individuals wishing to take individual courses.

Timed Agenda

1:00 - 1:30pm Introductions, review of foundational principles for the group, and overview of the day.

1:30 - 2:00pm Review the case study in smaller groups. *a brief bathroom break*

2:00 - 2:30pm Analyze the case as a larger group and examine the socio-political implications.

2:30 - 3:00pm Discuss strategic approaches. Apply the knowledge to trauma-informed and anti-oppressive practices. *a brief bathroom break*

3:00 - 3:30pm Identify a plan moving forward

3:30 - 4:00pm Reflection on the day’s work

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate social workers’ professional responsibility to advocate and work for policies that promote well-being across the life span.
  • Recognize the disparities among communities’ exposure to traumatic incidents.
  • Describe what is meant by trauma-informed policy.

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:

  • Advocate for trauma-informed policies.
  • Assess practices causing identity-based trauma.
  • Strategize best-practices to address oppressive policies.
