Course Description

This course highlights local women whose activism in multiple arenas set the stage for passage of the 19th amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. We’ll begin by looking at the relationship between abolition and women’s political awakening. We’ll also explore the organizing and lobbying experience women acquired through their roles in creating large public events and the infrastructure providing social services for women and children. We’ll also learn about the pivotal role of expanding educational opportunities for women and girls and its relationship to the suffrage movement. Finally, we’ll delve into the leadership, organizations, and strategies women used to build the suffrage movement in Pennsylvania and nationally.
