Course Description

 

NOTE: This Enrichment is intended for caseworkers who have not attended this training topic previously. If you previously attended, please do not register to attend again, unless directed to do so by your supervisor. Space is limited.

 

Financial Exploitation: A Case Walk-Through (Virtual Edition)

This training is designed to provide guidance to protective services caseworkers when investigating for financial exploitation by providing hands-on experience in planning, performing, and mitigating risk, in alleged cases of financial exploitation. The course consists of prerequisite readings and related questions estimated to be 1 hour in length total and a 6-hour classroom component including lecture and group activities. 

  • Individual registration is required for each person.

  • Enrollment is only available to adult protective services (APS) and older adults protective services (OAPS) staff and is not available to the public.

In order to receive PDA Protective Services credit hours, participants are required to:  

  • Participate in the training facilitated by Caroline Burnell. 
  • Video and audio are required to be on for the duration with the camera positioned for the entire face on the screen. 
  • Certificates will be issued upon successful completion.
  • Partial certificates for missing any portion are not available. 

 

Protective Services staff are required to attend six (6) hours of enrichment per calendar year

 

Training Details:

  • Prior to Training: Prerequisite reading and questions to be completed by participants prior to attending virtual training (estimated time: 1 hour)
  • Individual online registration is required for each person
  • Zoom Trial Run: optional and will be held the day prior to each training from 9 am - 9:30 am. (This trial run is to provide the opportunity to test participants' Zoom connection and for technical assistance if needed)
  • Day of Training Times: 8:30 AM sign-in with the training starting at 9:00 am and ending at 4:30 PM - Please be prompt and participate
  • Presented live, via Zoom Meeting
  • Zoom link and training materials will be sent to registered participants 1 week prior. You will need access to the training documents during the live training sessions. Printing is optional.
  • All participants will be required to have the following technology to join the online course:
    • Zoom Meeting connection
    • a computer microphone and speakers turned on for the entire online class (muted while not speaking)
    • a web camera turned on for the entire online class. The camera is to be positioned so the instructor can see your entire face on camera.
  • Participation is required
  • Attendees must be on time and stay for the duration
  • Certificate issued for Protective Services credit hours upon completion of both prerequisite course work and live training session
  • Participants are requested to not be in transit for the duration of the Zoom training
  • A partial certificate for late arrival or early departure is not available. Participants must be on camera and participate.

Course Outline

Training Day Schedule - Financial Exploitation: A Case Walk-Through (Virtual Edition):

  • 8:30 - 9:00 AM: Zoom classroom opens for sign-in and attendance. 
  • 9:00 AM – 4:30 pm: Training time (a morning, lunch, and afternoon break will be offered)

 

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will have the ability to:

  1. Describe financial exploitation and the two forms it can take
  2. Discuss questions you can ask an older adult to assess if they are a victim of financial exploitation
  3. List the effects financial exploitation may have on older adults
  4. Explain (what circumstances must have transpired) when you need to request information from the bank
  5. Explain what (information) to request from the bank and the purpose (of each requested item)
  6. Discuss the importance of red flags of financial exploitation and give specific examples of red flags observable in bank statements
  7. Relate the red flags identifiable in the bank statements to common methods of financial abuse
  8. Describe what steps to take when reviewing bank information
  9. Compute the calculations needed to answer the ISA financial exploitation questions
  10. Discuss service planning and risk mitigation applicable to financial exploitation cases

Continuing Education

Social Work Continuing Education: 

This training has been approved for 6 continuing education hours by Temple University Harrisburg. Temple University Harrisburg is a pre-approved provider of continuing education by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors.  These credit hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal
