Course Description

Are you looking to kickstart your career trajectory? Perhaps you're taking your first steps in your job search, or returning to the workplace after some time out, or looking to pivot your career in a new direction. Our Career Kickstarter series will give you concrete tools and strategies, no matter where you are in your job search journey.

This program is made up of six classes:

1: Ready, Set, Grow: the career search mindset (Instructor: Amber Key)
As job seekers, most of us know that being prepared with an impressive resume, flawless interview skills, and a winning smile are necessary to land your next job. But what isn’t usually discussed is the positive attitude and mindset that you need to adopt, develop, and maintain during the entire process of the job search. In this class, you'll learn about and develop strategies to maintain the mental fortitude that it takes to be successful in your job seeking or career pivot journey.

2: Resumes and transferable skills (Instructor: Cheryl Johnson)
There's no magic wand to wave over a resume and make it perfect for every job application. Resumes have to change and adapt depending on what skills you need to showcase. This session will give you tools and advice on how to highlight your transferable skills on your resume, current best practices, and ways to most effectively tailor your resume for different uses.

3: LinkedIn and tech tools (Instructor: Temple Career Services)
LinkedIn can be an immensely powerful tool for job searches, networking, and making connections; but as with any tool, you need to know the best ways to use it. Join staff from Temple's Career Services and learn how to make the best use of your profile, how to build your network, and how to incorporate other tech tools into your job search or career pivot.

4: Virtual networking and informational interviewing (Instructor: Cheryl Johnson)
As we start a new career path or look into moving laterally or vertically in our industries, sometimes it can be hard to find out what different jobs are really like, and whether they're the right move for you. This session will help you network virtually in this time of remote work and social distancing, and will also walk you through strategies for getting your questions answered in informational interviews.

5: Honing your interview style (Instructor: Temple Career Services)
No matter how many interviews you've gone through, whether you're preparing for your first or your hundredth, each one needs thorough preparation and practice. This session will provide strategies on every part of the interview process, from effective preparation, to ways of practicing standard interview questions, and the kinds of questions that you should be asking your prospective employer.

6: Strengths-based coaching (Instructor: Vanessa Williams)
Every part of the job search or career pivot process involves knowing what you're good at, and what makes you good at it. But sometimes it can be hard to think about our strengths and the different ways that we use them. For this session, you'll take Gallup's CliftonStrengths Assessment to identify your top strengths, before working through activities and discussion questions that will prepare you to showcase your strengths as effectively as possible.
