Course Description

This content-based course will present you with the listening and speaking skills necessary for the afternoon field trips. You will read and watch videos about the places you will be visiting and learn conversation skills to use during the field experiences. You will also write short descriptions and journal entries about the places you visit.

Each unit will include selected readings, vocabulary, and video content that directly relate to the afternoon field trips, including visits to Old City Philadelphia, South Street, various neighborhoods and art museums, among other sites.  Students will be expected to understand level-appropriate readings and audio and video content related to cultural themes of the class and gain the functional speaking skills required to discuss that content in class and use during field trips.  

Learner Outcomes

  1. Use contextual, grammatical and lexical cues to infer meaning in written text and audio materials
  2. Use information from texts and videos to deliver a formal presentation and participate in small group and whole class discussion
  3. Summarize information from readings
  4. Write journal entries and short essays describing places and experiences
  5. Correct grammar and pronunciation and use language strategies to overcome communication breakdown
  6. Understand common colloquial language
  7. Understand American cultural norms and apply this information in interactions with Americans
