Course Description

For this weaving class, some of the methods learned will include ikat, woven shibori and photo transfer onto warp and weft. We will be using the idea of magical appearance of color as the conceit of designing the warp or weft in a woven structure. The class will take students through the process of several surface treatments that will develop in their weavings as if by MAGIC. Indigo dye, commonly used in ikat, is known for its sacred powers of purity, and is activated only when it comes into contact with oxygen. Woven shibori uses additional threads woven into the weft to act as a resist against colorful dyes. The appearance of the weaving after the shibori dying is always an unexpected treat. Students will use photo sensitive dyes to create imagery on their woven patterns. Field trips to PMA, Fabric Workshop and other locations will be included in this exciting urban experience.
