Course Description

Course Description:  The introductory course will focus on forensic social work across micro, mezzo, and macro practice.  this course will identify and outline a broad range of criminal justice components including probation, parole, courts, and incarceration (jails/prisons) and relevant concepts and skills of forensic social work practice with individuals and families affected by such.  The course will have a particular emphasis on forensic practice with different forms of violent crime.  As such, the course will offer opportunities to define and understand different etiologies of violent crime, as well as interventions at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels.  The 3-hour course will also include a section on the importance of social work supervision and mentoring for social workers who practice forensic setting.

2:45 PM - 3:00 PM: Forensic social work practice with violence crime

Learner Outcomes

At te end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate the basic parameters of forensic social work practice (e.g., domains of practice, areas in which forensic social workers practice).
  • Critically analyze current criminal justice system discourse and the challenges of applying social work values and standards in settings that are antithetical to social work
  • Identify the main tenets of working with perpetrators and survivors of violent crime

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:

  • Demonstrate competence in basic forensic and legal concepts
  • Apply basic forensic theories to participants who are involved in the criminal justice system
