Course Description
Course Description: The current opioid epidemic is raising awareness about the needs of people affected by substance use. Pregnant women and infants affected by substances are in need of specialized support and care. Pennsylvania has seen a dramatic increase in Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome in the past 10 years. In this course, participants will review history and trends related to maternal substance use. We will review current treatment and support options. The course will present an overview on Noeonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) including symptoms, evolving treatment options, and how Pennsylvania is responding to support families.

9:00 AM – 9:15 AM: Check-in, Introductions, Review of Goals and Objectives and Recovery appropriate language
9:15 AM – 10:00 AM: History of policies, stigma and ethics
10:00 AM – 10:45 AM: Overview on maternal substance use and treatment recommendations
10:45 AM – 11:00 AM: Break
11:00 AM -12:00 PM: Overview on Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, symptoms, and treatment
12:00 PM – 12:15 PM: Closure, evaluations, and certificates
Learner Outcomes
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify tow (2) treatment options for pregnant women using substances
- Identify at lease one (1) barrier pregnant women face when accessing care
- Define Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome using recovery-oriented language
When participants return to the workplace, participants will be able to:
- Use recovery-oriented language when discussing substance use
- Identify two (2) resources available for pregnant women using substances
