Course Description

Course Description: This course will utilize the social determinants of health framework to better understand the intersection between pregnancy and birth outcomes. The United States has seen a concerning rise in maternal deaths and complications. Philadelphia has one of the highest maternal mortality and morbidity rates in the country with significant racial disparities. We will discuss how issues related to social determinants of health impact pregnancy, birth outcomes, and early infancy.

12:00-12:15 pm: Check-in, Introductions, Review of Goals and Objectives

12:15-12:45 pm: Overview of Social Determinants of Health

12:45-1:30 pm: Intersection of Social Determinants of Health in Maternal Child Health

1:30-2:00 pm: Racial disparities in pregnancy and birth outcomes

2:00pm: Closure, evaluations

Learner Outcomes

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

· Identify the six Social Determinants of Health

· Describe the impact of Social Determinants of Health on maternal child health

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:

· Identify 2 Philadelphia area resources available to families and pregnant women

· Describe one factor that contributes to racial disparities in maternal child health
