Democracy at Risk—Cyber Threats to Free Elections

Nancy McDonald

This course explores computer-based threats, foreign and domestic, to free and fair elections because an informed citizenry is critical for democracy. From hacking systems to manipulating social media to computerized gerrymandering, today’s technology can put democracy at risk. In addition to Russian interference in the 2016 election, China secretly infiltrated systems used by the U.S. presidential campaigns in 2008. Likewise, Americans have used computer technology to tamper with democracy. Plus, cyberattacks on elections overseas provide important insights for the United States.
