Course Description

Course Description:  CBT-ART is an innovative published protocol of treatment that integrates cognitive behavioural interventions with guided imagery and art therapy.  The combined two treatment methods focus on visual elements.  The protocol was implemented successfully in a prospective study design among women suffering from pain and postpartum depression.  the CBT-ART protocol integrates drawing and cognitive behavioural techniques to transform distressing images, symptoms, and memories.  The protocol aims to change the structural components of the image and, through this, reduce symptoms of distress, anxiety, and depression.  An advantage of this protocol is that it goes beyond the verbal level of interaction to introduce a more embodied visual approach, together with the use of cognition and insight as in most verbal psychotherapies.

In the CBT-ART workshop, we will teach participants how to use the CBT-ART model in addressing personal distressful images and memories as a way to enhance adaptive coping.  The learning will be experiential and interactive, together with theoretical foundations of the method.  The instructor will show, in vivo, how the protocol works by focusing on examples of stressful experiences.  The workshop will incorporate cognitive components, guided imagery, and the use of drawings in an integrative intervention.
