One Book, One Philadelphia focuses on building advanced critical reading skills. Each January, The Free Library of Philadelphia sponsors the One Book, One Philadelphia project during which Philadelphia-area citizens come together to read and discuss one designated book. The Library sponsors many events throughout the region focused on the theme of the chosen book including discussions with the author, organized book discussion groups at area coffee shops, arts events focused on an aspect of the book, presentations by experts on the topic, and many other interesting and engaging activities. In this class, students will read the novel and examine the culture, language, and insight offered by the themes of the novel. They will work in small groups to analyze the novel and create a final project focused on one of the events or characters in the book. Each week, they will explore various related topics by engaging in Chatting with Americans sessions and attend at least one public event sponsored by the One Book, One Philadelphia project.
