Learner Outcomes

Module One: The Disease of Addiction

How would you feel if you knew you lived next door to a drug addict? What if your child’s teacher was a recovering alcoholic? How would you react if you discovered your son or daughter was addicted to drugs?

Even though scientific research has shown that addiction is a disease similar to diabetes or cancer, society continues to view addicts as flawed, morally reprehensible individuals. The stigma of addiction prevents many of those who need help from seeking treatment, and forces people to continue hiding in the shadows.

Addiction affects millions of people and their families, friends and coworkers. It also takes a huge toll on society. Only by educating ourselves and clearing up the misunderstandings can we begin to make progress in fighting this disease.

In this module Dr. Jansen talks about substance use as a choice and a disease, how the brain is impacted by substance use and abuse and the fact that the two basic reasons people use a substance are to feel better or to decrease pain. Dr Jansen also provides an introduction to the six stages of change.

At the end of this module, participants will be able to:

1. Distinguish between substance use as a choice and a disease

2. Describe how the brain is impacted by substance use and abuse

3. Name at least 3 of the 6 stages of change

Module Two: Stigma Reduction

Stigmatizing attitudes of health professionals towards people with substance use problems negatively affect health care delivery and can potentially result in treatment avoidance. Negative attitudes of health professionals toward patients with an addiction are known to lead to poor communication, diminished therapeutic alliance and overall have the potential to influence the diagnosis, treatment and recovery of substance abuse disorders. This module reviews social and professional stigma as it relates to substance use disorder and how it influences our work as healthcare professionals and provides four concrete strategies health professionals can implement to reduce and eliminate stigma against those we serve.

At the end of this module, participants will be able to:

1. Describe social and professional stigma as it relates to substance abuse

2. Identify stigmatized language in the workplace

3. List 4 ways to address stigma in the workplace

Module 3: Key Elements of Motivational Interviewing Strategies

This final module includes a brief review of the salient points of modules one and two as well as a brief introduction to motivational interviewing, it’s basic concepts and strategies to enhance a person's motivation to change.

At the end of this module, participants will be able to:

1. Paraphrase a definition of motivational interviewing

2. List the 4 basic skills necessary for an effective MI conversation

3. List the 4 processes that frame the MI conversation
