Temple University Rockin’ Owls is a contemporary ensemble composed of Temple University students (music and non-music majors), staff, faculty, and community members from the Greater Philadelphia area. The ensemble utilizes modern music styles and genres (e.g., pop, rock, hip-hop, funk) as its central canon, and collaboratively will cultivate musical arrangements using members’ specific instrumental and vocal stylings.
The ensemble meets one evening per week for a combined three hours, totaling two hours of rehearsal and one hour of technical set up, take down, and execution. The ensemble creates an electronic press kit and holds a culminating performance the conclusion of each semester. Members may elect to participate for Temple University academic credit or pay a fee through Temple Music Prep continuing education to join as a community member (course credit is not transcripted in the latter choice).
No audition or previous experience in the styles and genres listed is required for participation, but participants should be confident on their instrument of choice, including but not limited to guitar, bass, keys, drums, brass, and/or woodwinds. Vocalists should be confident in roles as both lead and backup-singer in a multitude of styles, with expectation toward the ability to harmonize. Members with both instrumental and vocal skills are welcome additions. Ability to read traditional notation is not an expectation. Participants are guided to develop musical charts/lead sheets and non-standard notation on an individual basis. Instruments for weekly rehearsal and final performance provided.
