Course Description

This course is designed to improve the core English skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing at the high-intermediate level of English proficiency. In this class, you will read authentic language articles written by student writers and analyze the content and style. You will also participate in a writing workshop which will prepare you to write in a specific format. The course materials will focus on the experience of international students in the United States and current topics related to specific communities in Philadelphia. The class will discuss these topics at length and you will write a full-length article focused on the themes presented in class and in the readings.

Learner Outcomes

  • Use context, grammar, and vocabulary cues to infer attitude, mood and intentions and to anticipate what will come next in text and audio materials
  • Summarize information and support opinions in small group and whole class discussion and essays
  • Recognize and correct mistakes in verb tense and parts of speech in writing and speaking
  • Understand and avoid plagiarism
  • Use vocabulary learned in class in speaking and writing
  • Maintain grammatical control of complex language in writing and speaking with little or no breakdown in communication where a few residual errors occur
  • Think critically about academic issues by questioning assumptions and asserting points of view
