Course Description

An introduction to 20th century poetry which views Modernist poetry in light of postmodern perspectives. Topics may include innovation, formalism, contemporary alternatives to Modernism, new directions in post-War and postmodern poetry. More specifically, this course will be a study of 20th century poetry—beginning with and focused on Modernism—with the work of Stevens, Williams, Stein, Loy, Eliot, Pound and others examined in their social and political contexts, and with reference to their contributions to the development of Modernism. We will end the semester by following several trajectories in postmodernism. This course does not attempt to cover all poetry written since the beginning of the twentieth century. There is an emphasis on American poetry and an emphasis on innovation.
