Course Description

Description: This course will prepare the addiction and mental health practitioner with

accurately recognizing, assessing, and treating individuals who identify as LGBTQIA who are struggling with substance abuse and related problems. Special attention will be paid to comprehension of sexuality self-identifier terms, culturally-specific risk and etiological factors, and evidence-based culturally-competent treatment considerations.

This is part 1 of a 2 part course. Students may elect to take part 1 or 2 only at this time, however it is strongly recommended that Part 1 is taken before taking part 2.

 

Learner Outcomes

Learners will:

 

A. Understand the epidemiology and risk factors of substance abuse among the LGBTQIA population

 

B. Identify key terms and substance use trends in the LGBTQIA population.

 

C. Understand the characteristics and life experiences of LGBTQIA individuals and how they connect and correlate to substance use and abuse.

 

D. Develop and utilize culturally-competent practices to assist LGBTQIA clients with resolving problems and challenges that compromise their recovery.

 

Notes

Timed Outline:

9:00-9:30am: Intros, ice breaker activity, learning objectives, creation of safe space, self-assessment/pre-test of terminology understanding

 

9:30-10:15: First impressions small group exercise- Consider first impression

questions related to sexuality, gender; schemas discussion

 

11:15-12:00: Lecture: LGBTQIA terminology; discussion of gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation
