Course Description

Course Description:  In social work, we aim to serve others.  At times, in that pursuit, we neglect our own needs inside and outside of the workplace which impacts our work and ability to help others.  Participants will leave this course with specific techniques and resources to care for themselves as they care for others.

Continuing Education Clock Hours: 1.5 Hours

Course Outline

Course Agenda (when offered as a morning course):

   10:00-10:05: Introductions

· 10:05-10:30: Discussion on burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma

· 10:30-10:50: Impact on clients, clinicians and organizations

· 10:50-11:10: What is self-care? (Micro, Mezzo, Macro)

· 11:10-11:25: Self-care plans/interventions

· 11:25-11:30: Questions

 

 

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

· Compare and contrast burnout, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue

· Identify how to prevent, recognize and reduce the effects of burnout, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:

· Articulate the importance of self-care in social work and develop a plan to begin a personal self-care practice

· Implement specific tools and interventions to help improve their client's well-being and stress management
