Course Description

Note: This training was previously offered as Investigating Financial Exploitation.

 

Financial exploitation accounts for approximately 20 percent of cases reported to Adult Protective Services and Older Adult Protective Services. The estimated annual financial losses to older Pennsylvanians alone could be as high as $2.5 billion annually.¹

This training will be offered to protective services staff responsible for investigating alleged financial exploitation.

Financial documents reviewed in this class include:

  • Power of attorney document
  • Deed for Real Property
  • Loan application
  • Bank Statements (several examples)
  • Canceled checks
  • Withdrawal slips and offsets from a bank account
  • Deposit slips and offsets from a bank account

Course Outline

REGISTRATION

  • This course is for older adults protective services (OAPS) and adult protective services (APS) staff and is not available to the public.
  • Individual online registration is required for each person.
  • There is a limited number of registrations available per training.

IN-PERSON TRAINING DETAILS

  • Participants are required to be on time and attend the entire in-person classroom training.
  • Extra time will be needed to travel and navigate traffic, park, and walk to the training site. Please plan accordingly.
  • Sign-in begins at 8:30 AM. The training begins promptly at 9:00 AM and ends at 4:30 PM.
  • Four 10-minute breaks and a 1-hour lunch break will be provided. Classroom time is 6 hours.
  • Food and beverages will NOT be provided. Participants may bring food and beverages to the training site.

Learner Outcomes

At the conclusion of this training, the participants will be able to:

  1. Define financial exploitation and discuss how it can be accomplished.
  2. Explain the purpose of a financial power of attorney and describe investigative steps that should be considered when investigating a case involving a power of attorney.
  3. Describe the information that should be requested from a financial institution and discuss its importance.
  4. Design an investigative plan.
  5. Analyze financial records to identify red flags of financial exploitation.
  6. Complete the financial data section of the IS&A.

 

Notes

SOCIAL WORK CONTINUING EDUCATION (optional)

This training has been approved for 6 continuing education hours by Temple University Harrisburg. Temple University Harrisburg is a pre-approved provider of continuing education by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors.  These credit hours satisfy the requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal. 

  • The Social Work Continuing Education fee is $20.00. See below for the online payment link.

To obtain Social Work CE Credit, please complete the following items:

  1. Pay the Continuing Education Fee online by clicking here. (if not already completed at check out)
  2. Attend the entire course.
  3. Complete the online request form by clicking here.
  4. Complete the Course Evaluation after attending 
  5. First and last names will need to be included in the evaluation. 
  6. The evaluation will be sent via email after the training concludes.

 

TRAINING CANCELLATIONS

In the event of inclement weather, TUH will make every effort to cancel events with as much advance notice as possible. Notification will be sent via email (from Temple's registration system) once a decision has been made to close fully or have a delayed opening. In all instances, TUH will follow the University’s cancellation decisions.

    • There is limited parking available (25 Parking spaces in the lot, additional may be found in the area).

  • Directions:
    • From Liberty Street: go to 13th St. (off Rt. 8) and turn left, 1/2 block down there is a small driveway right before the training Center.
    • From Rt. 322: go across the 13th St. Bridge, go through 1 light, and turn left into the small driveway right past the training center.

 

  • Food and Beverages will NOT  be provided. Participants are welcome to bring their own. Please give yourself extra time if you plan to purchase food.
  • Note about the Temperature in the Training Room: It is difficult to maintain room temperatures that are comfortable for all participants, and the room temperature may vary. A sweater or jacket is helpful if the room becomes too cool.
