THE TROJAN WAR FROM THREE CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES

The Trojan War occurred around 1200 BCE. Homer records it in around 700 BCE. Chaucer’s version, Troilus and Criseyde is 1385-86. The Iliad was translated into English in 1598 by George Chapman and around 1602 Shakespeare writes, Troilus and Cressida. In this class we are going to read all three with the intent of analyzing how different cultures interpret the same story. We will read Emily Wilson’s new translation of The Iliad. Emily Wilson is a Professor of the Classics at the University of Pennsylvania.

 

Pre-Requisite: Students must purchase Emily Wilson’s translation of The Iliad.

Instructor Bio:

Christine MacArthur, M.A. English, M.Ed., B.A. Theater, Temple University. Christine taught English literature and Drama at Central High School in Philadelphia for thirteen years. She also worked with Philadelphia Young Playwrights in her Drama class coaching each student to write their own play. She is also an amateur musician and plays violin with the Old York Road Symphony Orchestra.

Why when I’m registering do I join the Wait List?
Several of our courses are in high demand. In order to accommodate our members who are not tech-savvy and have trouble registering online, we created a registration system in which there is no advantage to registering early, no disadvantage to registering later.

When registering, you join the Wait List for each course. Don’t be alarmed. This does not mean the course is full. After the registration period is over, we run a lottery on the courses, and it randomly determines who is admitted to each course and who is not. You typically will receive notification regarding which courses you are admitted to, about two weeks before the start of the semester. If a course accepts 150 or more students, you are very likely to get into it.
