EXPLORING A FEW RENAISSANCE WRITERS

Time: 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM

Location: In person at TUCC

 

Students will explore a few Renaissance works from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Lope de Vega’s Fuente Ovejuna, and Racine’s Phaedra. to Milton’s Samson Agonistes. More, Machiavelli, and Montaigne will provide prose readings. Discussions will begin with Sir Gawain on Jan. 30 and conclude with Milton on April 9. Students can use whatever texts they have, and most works are available on line.

 

Pre-Requisite: Interest in reading and discussing literary works.

Maximum In-Person: 40

 

Instructor Bio:

Lyle Murley, PhD, English, Northwestern University; MA, English, University of Chicago; BA English, St. Olaf College. Lyle was a professor of English at California Lutheran University, chair of the department, and now a professor emeritus. He was professor of the year on two occasions and received the Sears Roebuck Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence.

Why when I’m registering do I join the Wait List?
Several of our courses are in high demand. In order to accommodate our members who are not tech-savvy and have trouble registering online, we created a registration system in which there is no advantage to registering early, no disadvantage to registering later.

When registering, you join the Wait List for each course. Don’t be alarmed. This does not mean the course is full. After the registration period is over, we run a lottery on the courses, and it randomly determines who is admitted to each course and who is not. You typically will receive notification regarding which courses you are admitted to, about two weeks before the start of the semester. If a course accepts 150 or more students, you are very likely to get into it.
