Course Description

Exploration of the major issues in world poetry of the late 20th century. Theories and practice of postmodernism; the relation of poetry to other arts; the cultural contexts in which poetry is produced. Focusing on poetry written in the last 25 to 30 years, we will read with our focus on innovation. Our goals will include enjoying poetry and being surprised by it. Our readings will include work by established poets and younger poets. There will be an emphasis on North American poets, with special attention given to experimental poetry. The class will not function as a lecture, but rather as a conversation about contemporary poetry.
