Course Description

PDA's program, Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting for Dental Professionals, is approved by the Department of Human Services and the PA State Board of Dentistry and will fulfill Act 31 mandatory CE requirements for licensed dental professionals (dentists, hygienists and EFDAs). PDA’s program is custom designed for dental professionals and offers two CE credits that can be applied toward the hours you need to renew your dental license.

ATTENTION: Attendees will be asked to provide their full name, license number, date of birth and the last 4 digits of their social security number. PDA will transmit this information to the state to verify that you completed the course.

Learner Outcomes

Upon course completion, the participant will:

  • Understand categories of child abuse as defined by the Child Protective Services Law.
  • Discuss universal child abuse indicators.
  • Discuss clinical and intraoral pathologies of physical and sexual abuse.
  • Discuss the legal responsibilities as mandated reporters.
  • Discuss when, how and where to report suspected abuse, and what happens after a report is made.
  • Discuss the protections for reporters and penalties for failure to report.

Presenters

Angela M. Stout, DMD, MPH

Dr. Stout is a pediatric dentist in private practice in Erdenheim, PA, as well as a clinical assistant professor of Pediatric Dentistry at University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and the Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University. She completed her dental degree in 1993 at Temple University School of Dentistry and a three year pediatric dental residency at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1996. While teaching full-time at University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Stout completed a Master’s Degree in Public Health at University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. Dr. Stout is a passionate child advocate in the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

Mary C. Pugh, Esquire

Mary Coyne Pugh received her Bachelor’s Degree from Rosemont College, graduating summa cum laude. She received her Juris Doctorate from Villanova University School of Law in 1986. As a trial attorney, Ms. Pugh concentrated her legal practice in the area of medical malpractice, working solely in the defense of physicians and hospitals.  In 2005, Ms. Pugh became a child advocate for Montgomery Child Advocacy Project, MCAP and represents children who need a voice to protect them and help them cope with abuse and neglect. In 2006, she became the Executive Director for MCAP.  Ms. Pugh has no relevant financial relationships to disclose.
