Course Description

Walking Tour: Ancient Rome

The beauty and power of Ancient Rome are seen through monuments such as the Pantheon and the Area Sacra Argentina, as well as key works in the Musei Capitolini (the Spinario, She-Wolf, Marcus Aurelius, et al.). The visits will prompt discussion of how art and architecture relate to politics, propaganda and institutional religion.

Note: Bring water and comfortable walking shoes.

Cost: $60

Walking Tour: Early Christianity: from the 4th to 9th centuries

Early Christian art evolved apparently seamlessly from that of the pagan, pantheistic period to the years after 313, when the Emperor Constantine enacted freedom of worship. His daughter's Mausoleum, now the church of Santa Costanza, houses mosaics from 345, and the adjacent church of Sant'Agnese contains mosaics and magnificent stonework from 625; back within the walls of Rome we shall study Santa Prassede and its mosaics of 820.

Note: Bring water and comfortable walking shoes.

Cost: $60

Walking Tour: Caravaggio

The Renaissance search for describing truth in its various forms takes on special urgency in the work of the Lombard painter Caravaggio, who was active in a Rome in the decade around 1600. We shall study his works in their original settings in Santa Maria del Popolo, Sant'Agostino and San Luigi dei Francesi, and these startling images can be compared to paintings by Raphael and sculptures by Bernini, in two of the same group of churches.

Note: Bring water and comfortable walking shoes.

Cost: $60

$150 for all three sessions (Ancient Rome, Early Christianity and Caravaggio).
