Course Description

We will read and discuss Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex and Antigone and Euripides’ Bacchae as well as the myths that the dramas are based on. Carl Jung’s psychology will guide our understanding of the symbols in the myths and plays. Interpretations by Freud, Nietzsche, and other psychologists and philosophers will be presented for discussion, as will theories about the origins of Greek theater and Aristotle’s definitions of the elements and function of Greek tragedy. Each class will have both lecture and discussion.
