Course Description

Older adults, without question, are a vulnerable population. Too often, this population is overlooked when it comes to substance misuse and addiction. It is predicted that substance use disorders among older adults are expected to markedly increase nationally. Unfortunately, many older adults are not screened for substance use disorders (SUDs) and do not receive age-friendly, evidence-based treatment. With the legalization of medical marijuana, an increase in accidental opioid overdose fatalities, and a dramatic increase in high-risk drinking, it is important to prepare for the impact it has on older adults. In this training, learners will be able to define and describe substance misuse and substance use disorders, discover co-occurring disorders, recognize the risks and the signs and symptoms of SUD in older adults and review personal stigma and bias. Learners will also be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of available resources.
