Course Description

Join us in reading five stories of love, mythic, mystic, liberating and enslaving. We begin with Ivan Turgenev’s classic tale of First Love. We continue with E. M. Forster’s A Room with a View, his hopeful novel of young romance. Love suffers as the politics of patriarchal colonialism infect a marriage in Wide Sargasso Sea, Jean Rhys’ trenchant response to Jane Eyre. It suffers and mythically heals in war-torn Cyprus in Elif Shafak’s The Island of Missing Trees. It’s a mystery to Lucy in her reflection on a haunting marriage in Booker-nominee Elizabeth Strout’s Oh William!
