Course Description

Note: This is a three-hour Protective Services Enrichment training. Participants will be required to take a minimum of three more enrichment hours to meet OAPS requirements.

Once an unknown commodity, available only to tech-savvy individuals, cryptocurrency continues to grow in popularity. This increase in popularity is not limited to the marketplace. The Federal Trade Commission’s June 2022 data spotlight shows cryptocurrency is a common way for scammers to steal money, with over 46,000 people reporting losing more than a billion dollars in cryptocurrency to scams between January 2021 and March 2022. Consequently, protective services caseworkers are increasingly identifying cryptocurrency as a means used to financially exploit people.

This training will provide participants with an overview of cryptocurrency, highlight different ways in which cryptocurrency can be used in cases of financial exploitation, discuss different investigative steps that can be taken, and lastly provide participants with ways that people can protect themselves against exploitation involving cryptocurrency.

  • Individual registration is required.
  • Enrollment is only available to adult protective services (APS) and older adults protective services (OAPS) staff and is not available to the public.

In order to receive Protective Services credit hours, participants are required to:

  • Participate in the live class session (that is offered via Zoom)
  • Video and audio are required to be on for the duration with the camera positioned for the entire face on the screen.
  • Certificates will be issued upon successful completion.
  • Partial certificates for missing any portion are not available.
OAPS staff are required to attend six (6) hours of enrichment per calendar year (Jan-Dec).
