Course Description

This course focuses on the visual culture of Western Europe and the Western Mediterranean from about 400 through the year 1000. Intensive areas of focus are the Anglo-Saxon, Carolingian and Ottonian periods, as well as early Medieval Spain, and the use of art and architecture to shape ideas about institutions such as kingship and monasticism. Manuscript illuminations receive special attention. NOTE: Field trips are mandatory for this class. (Prior to fall 2009, the course title was "The Dark Ages.")

The Senior Scholars program is an auditing program for Temple graduates, as well as their spouses or partners, and other friends of Temple, age 50+. As an auditor, you will not receive a grade or academic credit for this course. A few days before the start of the semester, you will receive an email confirming your enrollment and providing more information on how to get started in your course.

This course will be meeting T, TH from 12:30-1:50PM on Temple University's main campus from Monday, January 12th  through Tuesday, May 5, 2026 in Tyler School of Art, Room 0B081

Please note: classes are not held during Spring break: March 2 to 6, 2026.
