CDE1912 - Nitrous Oxide Sedation Certification (Hands On)

Course Description

Would you like an update on Nitrous Oxide Sedation?  Would you like to fulfill the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Board of Dentistry Certification on Nitrous Oxide Administration?  This course will give dentists the opportunity to administer as well as monitor nitrous oxide analgesia.  This program is ideal for dentists who are already using nitrous oxide sedation but want an update on new materials, techniques and precautions.  This course is designed to provide information and knowledge to qualify a dentist for a Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry restricted permit II, to administer nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia.  

 Nitrous Oxide Certification program includes the below:

1.   Complete the Nitrous Oxide Sedation course (7.5 CE) on February 12, 2027

2.   Complete the online application at https://www.pals.pa.gov for Anesthesia Permit – Restricted II.

2.   Complete the Preparation and Prevention of Medical Emergencies in Dental Office course (7.5 CE) on March 5, 2027

3.   Complete the hands-on clinical training with Dr. Marc Gottlieb, arranged at the mutual convenience between yourself and Dr. Gottlieb after the completion of both courses stated above.  The hands-on training will be on location in your office with your equipment and staff.  (NOTE: Please make sure all necessary paperwork and/or protocols that need to be completed on your end are addressed before he visits your location.)

4.   All the above requirements must be completed within 6 months from March 5, 2027 (August 2027)

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Describe the physiology, pharmacology, and clinical effects of nitrous oxide/oxygen (N₂O/O₂) analgesia.
• Demonstrate the proper administration of N₂O/O₂ analgesia in accordance with current clinical guidelines and accepted standards of care.
• Satisfy the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry educational requirements for eligibility to apply for a Restricted Permit II for the administration of N₂O/O₂ analgesia.

Presenters

Dr. Pooja Gangwani

Dr. Gangwani is an associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Temple University College of Dentistry. She is a program director of oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program and a director of sedation center.  She earned her dental degree from New York University College of Dentistry where she was inducted in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) dental honor society and received her advanced training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. Dr. Gangwani is board certified and practices full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery.  Her expertise includes performing wisdom teeth extraction, bone grafting procedures, dental implant reconstruction, corrective jaw surgery and reconstructive surgery after facial trauma. She also specializes in management of TMJ disorders and benign pathology.  Dr. Gangwani also holds a master’s degree in public health epidemiology from the University of North Texas Health Science Center. She has a particular interest in clinical research and has served as an author of book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals. She enjoys educating residents and finds it extremely rewarding.

Dr. Mehran Hossaini

Dr. Hossani is a Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Medicine and Surgery at Temple University School of Dentistry.  He obtained his dental degree from the Oregon Health Sciences University, and completed his training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York.  His clinical expertise includes maxillofacial trauma, facial reconstruction, dental implantology, and outpatient anesthesia. He is an active full-time educator and clinician.  His areas of interest include curriculum development for various levels of learners, outcome assessment, and integration of technology in education.  Dr. Hossaini is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He maintains an active practice at Temple University School of Dentistry and lectures on the state, national and international levels.

Dr. Marc Gottlieb

Dr. Marc M. Gottlieb was born and raised on Long Island, attended Union College in Schenectady New York and then shuffled off to Buffalo for Dental School. While attending the University at Buffalo he received many academic scholarships, awards and fellowships. After graduation from dental school Dr. Gottlieb went on to a two-year post-graduate residency program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center This unique opportunity provided advanced training in anesthesiology and all the specialties of dentistry.  Dr. Gottlieb is currently on staff at Stony Brook University Hospital and part time private practice. During his 42 year dental career was awarded 2 U.S. patents, presented over 125 continuing education programs and published over 20 dental articles.
