*CAN WE TALK?: CIVIL DIALOGUE IN TROUBLED TIMES

Course Description: Polls consistently show Americans to be divided, sick of politics and reluctant to risk conversations about challenging issues. This course will offer concepts, tools and tips to help older adults hold productive conversations with friends, neighbors, co-workers and family members, even about the most difficult topics. It will explore the checkered history of civility in America. It will review the social psychology research about listening, reasoning and groupthink that underlies best practices in dialogue. It will be interactive, offering chances for students to try out what they are learning through in-class exercises. It will be fun.

Online Instructor Bio: Chris Satullo is director of the Pennsylvania Project for Civic Engagement, an arm of the Committee of Seventy. He leads its “Can We Talk?” program of civil dialogue. Formerly, he was vice president of news and civic engagement for WHYY public media and an editorial page editor and columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer. Satullo has won more than 60 awards for journalism and civic engagement. He co-taught seminars on civil dialogue at both Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania and helped found the Red and Blue Exchange at Penn. He is a graduate of Williams College and a former Fulbright Fellow.
