*THE HISTORY OF ARAB CITIZENS OF ISRAEL

Course Description: The course will discuss Israel’s Arab population since 1882. It will critically discuss settler-colonial claims and the role of the Grand Mufti in undermining any possibility of peaceful coexistence, the 1948 war and the original meaning of the Nakba. After independence, Arab citizens experienced harsh treatment. While their situation improved, once the Oslo Accords failed and a second intifada ensued, many Arab citizens favored autonomy. The course documents the Zionist funding responses that led to remarkable improvements to Arab towns, and unprecedented Arab educational and occupational advances; and how the current war impacted Arab citizens.

Instructor Bio: Robert Cherry taught economics at Brooklyn College from 1976 until his retirement in 2019 and is an affiliate of the Economic Policy Institute. He has authored eight books, including his most recent, Arab Citizens of Israel: How Far Have They Come? (Wicked Son Press, 2026).
