CDE1898 - ACDE Webinar: Endodontics - The Art of Maintaining Natural Teeth
Course Description
This lecture explores the central philosophy of contemporary endodontics: preserving the natural dentition whenever possible. Through an evidence-based clinical approach, participants will learn how modern endodontic techniques and treatment concepts empower clinicians to successfully manage complex clinical situations and maintain the health, function, and esthetics of natural teeth. The presentation will address sound decision-making principles and practical, clinically applicable strategies for a variety of challenging endodontic scenarios, including anatomical complexities, endodontic-periodontal lesions, and both surgical and non-surgical approaches to resolving iatrogenic complications or persistent endodontic infections. Attendees will gain valuable insights into predictable, biologically driven protocols that improve outcomes even in demanding cases, reinforcing the understanding that endodontics is both a science and an art dedicated to keeping natural teeth.Learner Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Understand the principles and decision-making frameworks that guide the preservation of natural teeth through contemporary, evidence-based endodontic care.
- Learn practical and clinically applicable strategies for managing complex endodontic scenarios—including anatomical challenges, endodontic-periodontal lesions, and iatrogenic complications—using both surgical and non-surgical approaches.
- Recognize predictable, biologically driven treatment protocols that enhance outcomes in demanding cases, reinforcing endodontics as both a scientific and artistic discipline focused on maintaining natural dentition.

Speaker
Dr. Ricardo Machado
Dr. Ricardo Machado, DDS, MSc, PhD, is an endodontist and Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Endodontics at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry. With almost 20 years of experience in clinical practice and academic teaching, he dedicates his work exclusively to Endodontics, integrating evidence-based principles with advanced clinical techniques. Dr. Machado earned his DDS degree from the University of Vale do Itajaí (UNIVALI), followed by specialty training in Endodontics at the State University of Londrina (UEL). He completed his MSc at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PUC/PR) and obtained his PhD in Endodontics from the University of São Paulo (USP), followed by a Postdoctoral Stage at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PUC/PR). Throughout his career, he has held multiple academic appointments, including Associate Professor and program coordinator, in Brazil, where he played a key role in undergraduate and postgraduate education. He is currently involved in clinical teaching and patient care in the United States, contributing to the training of future specialists. Dr. Machado’s research focuses on endodontic microbiology, root canal disinfection, instrumentation techniques, and treatment outcomes. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific publications in high-impact journals and has an established international research presence, with a strong citation record and H-index across multiple databases. He is also the author of the comprehensive textbook “Endodontia: Principios Biologicos & Tecnicos”, which was launched in Brazil and sold out within around a year. In addition to his academic contributions, Dr. Machado serves as a reviewer and editorial board member for several international journals, including BMC Oral Health, Scientific Reports, the Australian Endodontic Journal, the Journal of the American Dental Association, and Clinical Oral Investigations. His work centers on advancing clinical excellence and preserving natural teeth through scientifically grounded, patient-centered endodontic care.
