Course Description

In smooth or troubled times, we may turn to family, to our colleagues at work or play, or to new or old friends to find meaning and comfort. Join us for a lively discussion of four Booker-listed novels that explore the relationships that sustain, challenge, and define us:

  • The Things We Never Say, by Elizabeth Strout (Tuesday, Sept. 22, 10-11:45am)
  • Whistler, by Ann Patchett (Tuesday, Oct. 13, 10-11:45am)
  • Kin, by Tayari Jones (Tuesday, Oct. 27, 10-11:45am)
  • The Autumn Quartet, by Barbara Pym (Tuesday, Nov. 10, 10-11:45am)

Participants will consider how these masterful storytellers illuminate questions of identity, connection, belonging, and resilience across generations.

Notes

Class sessions are held on Tuesday mornings live, via Zoom and will be led by long-time Temple instructor Miriam Camitta, MFA Fiction, (Bennington Writing Seminars), PhD, Folklore and Folklife, (University of Pennsylvania).
