Course Description

This course examines representations of literary love, focusing on works that explore relationships among authors, readers, and texts. Each session centers on a single book to analyze how desire, creativity, and discovery inform narrative and thematic structures.

February 24 — What We Can Know by Ian McEwan A pair of scholars seeking a coveted sonnet lost amid environmental and romantic catastrophe in Ian McEwan’s propulsive What We Can Know.

March 10 — Heart the Lover by Lily King A writer wanting to know if love is enduring in Lily King’s masterful Heart the Lover.

March 24 — Possession by A.S. Byatt Another pair of scholars searching for an elusive antique love sonnet in A.S. Byatt’s Possession.

April 7 — The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai Young writers finding love clashes with tradition and ambition in Kiran Desai’s epic The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny.

Instructor: Miram Camitta: PhD, MS, MFA, has been teaching the Book Discussion class at Temple University for twenty years. A writer, folklorist and life-long educator, her creative non-fiction can be found in The Masters Review, Fourth Genre, is forthcoming in Image Journal, and has been recognized as a notable in Best American Essays of 2023, won Honorable Mention in Glimmer Train Magazine, and has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, 2023.
