Course Description

This beginner course is an introduction to substance use disorder and how it is addressed in a healthcare setting. Substance use disorder and
the opioid epidemic have severely impacted Philadelphia in recent years. Social workers play a crucial role in the assessment, treatment, and
placement of patients experiencing substance use and also promote positive culture change in healthcare. This course will focus on the
relationship between substance use disorder and chronic illness, as well as treatment options.

Learner Outcomes

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common substances seen in healthcare and the appropriate language to use
  • Recognize the relationship between substance use and chronic illness
  • Gain Knowledge of two evidence-based practices that can be used with patients with a history of substance use.

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:

  • Identify treatment options and levels of care for patients with SUD
  • Utilize two evidence-based practices to provide person-centered quality care to patients with a substance use history.

Notes

Instructor Biography: Kevin O'Keefe, LCSW, has 9 years of Social Work experience including 7 years in healthcare and 2 years in Mental Health & Substance Use Recovery Program. He graduated from the University at Albany, SUNY. He received the Internships in Mental Health Grant which provided students with specialized evidence-based training in mental health & substance use. He completed a post-master's certificate in Pall. Care & End of Life through Smith College. Kevin is a current NYU Zelda Foster Leadership Fellow. His research focuses on the experience of Palliative Care Social Workers and patients with both Palliative and substance use needs.
