Course Description

This course encompasses a great deal of information about the aging process and ones' ability to cope during the process. Discussion will be centered on aging in general, providing dental care by diagnosis and treatment planning of the older and possibly infirm patient, Discussion will cover restorative procedures and MID (Minimally Invasive Dentistry) a most important aspect of keeping things simple, yet productive and long­ lasting with minimal tooth loss and discomfort. Cases will be shown during the lecture.  The importance of diagnosing and treatment planning will be discussed in depth. As well as alternative treatment plans and discussions with course attendees.  Knowing your patient is the most important aspect of working with the elderly population for continued success in treatment and long-term dental care. Communication techniques will be discussed showing how to promote trust and understanding with your patients for the long run.  This course is designed to enhance your knowledge of aging, the aging process, and treatment for the older individual under "normal" and unnormal situations.  Communication from the participants is encouraged by maximum learning and absorption of the information presented.

Learner Outcomes

Upon course completion, the participant will:

 

  • Identify key statistical trends related to the geriatric population, including prevalence of chronic diseases, medication usage, and demographics, to enhance clinical awareness and treatment planning.
  • Demonstrate effective communication techniques for interacting with medically or cognitively compromised older adults, ensuring respectful, clear, and patient-centered exchanges.
  • Accurately diagnose common oral health conditions in older adults and apply appropriate clinical management strategies tailored to age-related changes and comorbidities.
  • Explain the physiological and psychological aspects of the aging process, including how these changes impact dental care and treatment planning.
  • Evaluate and justify treatment decisions in complex restorative scenarios commonly encountered in geriatric patients, considering factors such as functional limitations, prognosis, and patient preferences.
