Course Description

Complications can and will occur with our implant retained restorations. Especially when it comes to the with our restorations are either screw or cement retained. These presentations will cover the problems encountered with both screws and cements and methods of prevention unfavorable outcomes.

Learner Outcomes

Upon course completion, the participant will:

  • Compare the properties of various dental cements and analyze the challenges they pose in implant restorations, including retention, biocompatibility, and retrievability.
  • Identify the clinical difficulties in detecting and managing residual cement and recognize its role in peri-implant disease.
  • Distinguish between cements that are safe for use with implants and those that present toxicity risks, based on current scientific evidence.
  • Demonstrate techniques for applying cement in a manner that minimizes the risk of excess and improves peri-implant tissue health.
  • Explain the fundamental principles of screw mechanics as they relate to implant prosthetics.
  • Identify proper techniques for using torque devices and evaluate which torque devices offer the most reliable performance in clinical settings.
  • Discuss strategies to reduce screw loosening and prevent screw fracture, incorporating both biomechanical principles and clinical protocols.
  • Select the appropriate retention technique (cemented vs. screw-retained) based on individual clinical scenarios, prosthetic goals, and patient factors.

Dr. Steven Present

Dr Steven Present grew up in Brooklyn, NY. He attended the University of Wisconsin where he graduated with a degree in Medical Microbiology and Temple University School of Dentistry where he graduated with honors and was elected into Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. He did postgraduate studies in microbiology and immunology at The Thomas Jefferson Medical College. He completed a program for the treatment of oral facial pain and temporomandibular disorders at The New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Present is currently a clinical associate professor at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry, a past contributor to The U.S. Pharmacopeia Drug Information for Health Care Professionals, a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology of Basel Switzerland, a menber of The ITI’s Speaker Library Committee, and a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He holds a Certificate in Implant Dentistry and is a Diplomate of The Academy of Osseointegration. He was on the Academy’s Subcommittee for Clinical Innovations, Chairman of the Academy’s Fellowship Committee and a member of the Academy’s Credentialing Committee and is the Director of The Global Outreach Chapter of the Academy of Osseointegration at The Kornberg School of Dentistry. He was the national dental advisor for Health Advocate Inc. and was on the faculty of Manor College’s EFDA program from 1988 to 2015.  He has lectured nationally and internationally on advanced and complex implant reconstruction and maintained a private practice in North Wales, PA. He was named one of Philadelphia Magazine’s Top dentist in 2012 to 2024.
