Course Description

This course explores the Social Workers role in supporting clients at the end of life. Themes covered will include support for those at end of life including Hospice, Palliative Care and the role of Death Doulas. This topic will also delve into the ethical considerations at end-of-life surrounding medical treatments, quality of life and balancing patient’s wishes. NASW Standards of Care in End-of-Life Care will be reviewed as well as Ethical Principles in healthcare.

Learner Outcomes

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify the NASW standards in Palliative and End of Life care. 
  • Analyze the various support programs available to patients at end of life. 
  • Identify the Ethical Principles surrounding End of Life care. 

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:

  • Utilize ethical principles when caring for and supporting patients at end of life. 
  • Advocate for patient's rights for their care. 
  • Make an appropriate referral based on patient's needs and wishes for their care.

Instructor Biography: Melissa Wombwell-Twersky, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker working in the field for the past 25 years with an emphasis on Hospice and Palliative Care for the last 15 years. She currently works for Temple University Hospital as a Palliative Care Social Worker and as a CEU Course Instructor for Temple University. Melissa also provides clinical supervision to Social Workers studying for their clinical license. Melissa received her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from West Chester University in 1997 and received her Master’s degree in Social Work from Temple University in 2002. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and a member of the Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network.
