HBGBHSL0027 - DHS – BHSL Staff Training – Sexual Expression in Later Life and Long-Term Future Planning
Course Description
This training highlights the importance of recognizing, respecting, and understanding sexuality and sexual expression among older adults. Participants will explore the role of informed consent and gain tools for effective long-term care planning. The course will identify best practices for supporting LGBTQ+ older adults and help develop inclusive communication skills, including how to ask respectful questions about sexual orientation and gender identity. It will also cover how to establish service criteria that address the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals. The overall goal is to foster a more inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment that honors the rights and preferences of all older adults.
This hybrid training consists of a 3-hour self-paced prerequisite and a 4.5-hour virtual live training. 7.5-credit hours will be issued after completion of both requirements.
Course Outline
Registration:
- Individual online registration is required for each person
- There are a limited number of registrations per training
- During this fiscal year, a total of 4 trainings are being offered on this topic
In order to receive 7.5-credit hours, participants must:
- Complete the 3-hour online self-paced prerequisite training, which includes instructor videos and reading of supplementary information.
- Participate in the 4.5-hour live virtual training facilitated by Michelle Gayette.
- Audio and video ARE required to be turned on for the live, 4.5-hour training on the Zoom platform.
- Certificates for 7.5-hours will be issued upon successful completion and verification of both activities.
- Partial certificates for completing one activity are not available.

Learner Outcomes
At the conclusion of this, the participants will be able to:
- Describe sexuality and sexual expression in later life and dispel common myths and misconceptions.
- Explain the historical experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals and how these may influence their willingness to seek long-term services and supports.
- Introduce and apply appropriate LGBTQ+ terminology.
- Develop and apply inclusive communication skills, including how to ask respectful questions that foster a supportive and affirming environment.
- Understand key aspects of decision-making authority and legal documentation and explain their impact on the care and rights of older adults.
- Identify best practices and establish service criteria to effectively support LGBTQ+ older adults.

These courses are not open to the public.
Must be an active Bureau of Human Services Licensing Representative.

If you do not have audio on your computer, the Zoom platform can be accessed on your smartphone or tablet. You must have the hardware (desktop or laptop, tablet or smartphone) and software (Browsers such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Microsoft Edge) to access the internet. A broadband internet connection (DSL, cable, fiber, etc.) is recommended with a hardwired Ethernet cable. Wireless (Wi-Fi) connections may be utilized but a weak or congested signal may cause issues with video buffering or content access.
