Course Description

Please note: This course fulfills the ethics requirements for licensure with the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors.

This course is primarily designed for social workers across all areas of practice. By incorporating AI tools, social workers can enhance their service delivery to diverse populations while saving time. The skills taught in this course are crucial as they equip social workers with the knowledge to utilize AI responsibly and ethically. Understanding and applying AI in daily practice can lead to more informed decision-making, efficient management of caseloads and services, improved outcomes for clients, and enhanced efficiency for administrative tasks. For social work supervisors, the session provides guidance on how to use AI in supervision and how to adopt these technologies effectively and ethically. A significant component of the course includes a thorough review of the NASW Code of Ethics, particularly focusing on how these ethical standards apply to the use of AI in social work practice and supervision. This ensures that all technological interactions adhere to core social work values and principles, promoting respect for the inherent dignity and worth of persons, the importance of human relationships, and the quest for social justice through responsible and informed AI usage.

Learner Outcomes

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify and apply the NASW Code of Ethics in the context of using AI in social work practice and supervision, ensuring that their use of technology aligns with the core values and principles of social work
  • Understand the functionalities and potential of AI technologies, and promote their adoption into social work practice to improve the efficiency of social work services across micro, mezzo, and macro social work practice.
  • Utilize AI tools to enhance clinical supervision in social work, leveraging technology to deepen learning, enhance reflective practice, and improve supervision outcomes.

When participants return to the workplace, they will be able to:

  • Identify and explain three specific NASW Code of Ethics that are impacted by the use of AI technology in social work practice
  • Implement at least one AI tool learned during the course into their daily social work practice
  • Craft and utilize at least 1 AI prompt to enhance their social work practice

Notes

Instructor Biography: Dr. Marina Badillo-Diaz is an accomplished social worker and educator with a focus on school social work, mental health, and the integration of artificial intelligence into social work practice. As a consultant at MABD Consulting, she trains educators and social workers to utilize innovative technologies and methodologies. Dr. Badillo-Diaz advocates for ethical AI use, managing the blog "The AI Social Worker" to integrate AI tools into social work. She teaches courses on school social work, decolonization of social work practices, and ethics at New York University, Columbia University, the University of Kentucky, and Hunter College. Dr. Badillo-Diaz earned her MSW from Columbia University and her DSW from New York University and is an LCSW in New York State.
